While the surgery will make you look better than you do now, it won't restore your hair to what you had before you began to lose your hair, nor will it transform you into Heather Locklear. All the hair restoration surgeons say that patients need to come to terms with this before they agree to surgery. Moreover, if you are seeking consultation for a hair transplant and this reality is not made clear to you or the procedure is not presented in a realistic light, get another opinion. It is better to expect a small return from the procedure and be pleasantly surprised than to have false expectations and be disappointed.
Once a patient accepts the reality of what hair restoration surgery can and cannot do, the surgeon will paint a realistic picture, saying: This will look better; this won't change; will you be happy with that?
But it gets worse before it gets better.
Because the hair follicle, which is the important part of the procedure, is transplanted, the hairs moved to the new location fall out within three weeks of the surgery, and new hair does not begin growing until around the third month. In about six to eight months, about 90 percent of the finished results will be noticeable.
There will be scabbing of the incisions right after the surgery, so you're not going to emerge from the surgical suite looking like you just stepped out of the salon with new, flowing locks. This is not a quick fix, and the good results of the procedure will not be noticeable for some months. It takes a whole year and patience before the full benefits are seen.
Most transplant surgeons advise their patients to continue using topical minoxidil if they are already doing so. And if minoxidil is working for you in keeping the hair you still have, continuing its use after the transplant is crucial, the physicians advised.
But the artistry of the procedure is how the new hairs are distributed, and your surgeon will discuss this with you. And remember, if you do have a viable donor site and you can afford the procedure, you can have additional transplants as time goes on.
